COPENHAGES, Australia (AP) —A pharmaceutical giant has raised prices for its popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, but it will pay the same price for the little blue pill, its maker, Pfizer, announced Monday.
Pfizer said the price for a 100 milligram dose of the drug is $7,800, while generic drugmaker Eli Lilly and the United States government spent $11.8 billion on Viagra in 2012.
"The government has spent the taxpayers' money on advertising Viagra, so we don't pay for the expensive medicines," Eli Lilly, Pfizer's U. S. division, said in a statement.
The pharmaceutical giant had planned to make Viagra available to those who take the drug but had agreed to pay more than $20 million to the government.
It also said it would pay a royalty on all profits it had to pay to the government in 2012. The government spent $11.8 billion on advertising Viagra, the company said.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Lilly said the company had spent millions of dollars on research and marketing.
Pfizer spokeswoman Mary Jo Hargrecht said the company had been in the research and marketing business for several years and had "a long history of success."

"We believe that Viagra, which has the same active ingredient and same effects on the human body, will remain a top-selling prescription medicine," Pfizer said in a statement.
Eli Lilly has been negotiating with pharmaceutical companies for about a year to settle the charges brought against it by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
It is the first time it has been charged a price for a drug it does not sell, and it may be a cheaper option for some patients who would rather pay the full price, Pfizer said.
